Topical Medications We Deliver

Topical antibiotics: Antibiotic creams zap the bacteria that cause acne. We usually prescribe topical antibiotics with benzoyl peroxide, which breaks through dead skin cells that trap oil and bacteria.

Tretinoin: Another cause of acne is a build-up of dead skin cells that clog pores and lead to inflammation. This Vitamin A-based cream increases cell turnover to keep skin clear.

Oral Medications We Deliver

Antibiotics: Oral antibiotics work from the inside to prevent acne-causing bacteria from living on your skin. If we prescribe antibiotics it’s usually for a limited time.

Spironolactone: Some acne results from androgen hormones causing skin and hair follicles to over-produce oil, trapping bacteria. This daily pill counteracts these hormones.

Combination birth control: Hormone fluctuations trigger acne in many people with periods. By regulating hormones birth control pills may reduce acne.

*Note: We do not prescribe the medication Accutane, which is only for severe acne and requires care by an in-person medical provider.

Acne Questions?

  • How does acne treatment with Nurx work?

Nurx acne treatment is a one-year care plan for mild and moderate acne, designed in consultation with a board-certified dermatologist with expertise in delivering dermatology care via telehealth. Nurx acne treatment includes an online evaluation by a medical provider licensed in your state, medication prescribed (if medically appropriate) and delivered, a scheduled check-in with the Nurx medical team, and unlimited follow-up with a Nurx medical provider for one year.

To start acne treatment with Nurx, visit the Nurx website or download the Nurx app and fill out a comprehensive online intake, detailing your skin and health history, including photos of your acne. These photos are uploaded directly into your secure Nurx account.

A trained and licensed member of our medical team will review your health profile and photos and ask any follow up questions in order to confirm that we can safely and appropriately treat you via telehealth and, if so, will create a personalized acne treatment plan that may include topical or oral medications. Our pharmacy will fill the prescription and mail medication to your home. The medication will typically arrive 3-5 days after the prescription is filled.

A Nurx medical provider will check in with you about ten weeks after treatment begins and ask you questions about how treatment is working. If needed, the Nurx provider may adjust the treatment plan. In addition, patients may reach out to our medical team at any time with questions or to request a prescription change.

  • How much does acne treatment through Nurx cost?

The medical consultation to begin acne treatment costs $40, and this price covers one year of care by the Nurx medical team. It includes a medical provider licensed in your state evaluating your health and skin profile and creating your personalized treatment plan, writing prescriptions, and following up with you to make sure your treatment is working. You may also message our medical team any time over the course of the year to ask questions or request prescription changes. The $40 is paid when you submit your request for treatment and is not covered by insurance, though you may be able to pay for it with FSA or HSA funds.

We will bill insurance (if you have it) for your medications, and the copay (if any) will depend on your particular plan. If you do not have insurance we offer transparent out-of-pocket pricing, which starts at $25/month for prescription topical medication and $15-30/month for prescription oral treatments.

  • What type of acne treatment does Nurx prescribe?

After reviewing your health profile and photographs of your acne, a Nurx medical provider will create a custom treatment plan using evidence-based prescription medications. Most patients will receive a topical treatment of either topical antibiotics, a retinoid cream, or both. Patients with moderate acne are likely to also receive a prescription oral medication: Antibiotics, spironolactone, or combination birth control pills. While completing the online assessment you may indicate if there are certain prescriptions that you are or are not interested in. The Nurx pharmacy fills the prescriptions and sends medications to your doorstep, and after ten weeks of treatment the Nurx medical provider will follow up and adjust prescriptions if needed.

Please note that we do not prescribe isotretioin (Accutane).

  • Who can use the acne service from Nurx?

Nurx acne treatment is available to adults 18 and older in the states where Nurx operates, once a Nurx medical provider reviews your assessment and determines that we can safely and appropriately treat you via telehealth. We cannot treat people who are currently pregnant because some of the medications we prescribed are contraindicated for pregnancy.

We do not currently treat minors, but may be able to in the future. If you are under 18 or the parent of a child under 18 who may be interested in acne treatment through Nurx, join the waitlist to be notified once the service is available to minors.

  • I already know which acne treatment works for me, can I have Nurx prescribe and deliver it?

When you complete your online assessment and share your history we will ask you to indicate which medications you’ve taken in the past, and whether you would like to keep taking them. We cannot guarantee that you will receive a particular prescription. Once you submit your request for treatment, pay $40 for your medical consult, and after your Nurx medical provider reviews your health history and photos they will be in touch about your specific treatment plan and work with you to determine the best treatment plan for you.

  • Does Nurx prescribe Accutane?

Nurx does not prescribe isotretinoin or Accutane, because this medication requires more monitoring than we can provide via telehealth at this time. We treat mild and moderate acne, but if we determine that a patient has severe acne we may refer the patient to in-person care.

  • Can I use Nurx’s dermatology services while pregnant or breastfeeding, or when trying to conceive?

No. Because some of the medications we prescribe are not or may not be safe for an unborn or breastfed baby we do not provide acne treatment to people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant at this time.
