Cephalexin (also known as Keflex) belongs to a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. Cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). This medicine works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infections in the body.

What is cephalexin?

Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. There are several different kinds of bacteria, but it works against most major types. Infections that cephalexin treats include: skin infections (boils), ear infections, bone infections, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cephalexin generally has few side effects.
How does cephalexin work?

Cephalexin (Keflex) is an antibiotic that stops bacteria from reproducing in your body. It works by preventing bacteria from making their own protective covering. This kills the bacteria and prevents them from multiplying.
What are the side effects of cephalexin?

Cephalexin can cause some side effects in patients. These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and upset stomach. Other potential side effects include drowsiness and headache. Cephalexin can also cause yeast infections, which can be treated with Monistat or Diflucan. Tell your medical provider if you experience genital itching or abnormal discharge while taking cephalexin. It’s important that patients discuss all of these side effects with their medical provider before beginning treatment.
How do I take cephalexin?

Cephalexin comes as a tablet to take by mouth as directed by your medical provider. It is taken four times a day for five days. Do not take a larger dose or take it more often than recommended. Taking too much cephalexin may increase your risk of side effects. It is best to take cephalexin until the full prescribed amount is completed, even if symptoms disappear sooner, to prevent the infection from returning.
Can I take cephalexin with other medications?

Cephalexin does interact with some prescriptions, including other antibiotics and probenecid. It’s important to always let your medical provider know all of the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and supplements.
Are there any risks when taking cephalexin?

Be sure to tell your medical provider your medical history, especially kidney disease, diabetes, and stomach/intestinal disease. People who are pregnant or breastfeeding should inform their healthcare providers. This medication can also cause allergic reactions. Tell your provider if you are allergic to cephalexin, penicillins, or other cephalosporins such as cefpodoxime.
How quickly does cephalexin work?

Cephalexin starts working immediately to fight the infection in your body. Many people notice that symptoms diminish within a day or two of taking cephalexin. If you haven’t noticed any changes or feel worse after 2-3 days, talk with your medical provider about your concerns—and whether there are other drugs that might be more effective for you.
