Common questions

  • How does doxycycline hyclate work?

If prescribed, you will take doxycycline hyclate orally each day. Your provider will direct you to either take one or two pills of doxycycline hyclate.

  • What precautions should I take before starting doxycycline hyclate?

Always discuss your health history with your Nurx provider before taking a new medication, including doxycycline hyclate. It is best to take this medication with food to prevent stomach upset.

Frequent use of antibiotics, including doxycycline hyclate, can lead to oral thrush or vaginal yeast infections. An allergic reaction is rare but possible. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include fever, lymph node swelling, itching, swelling, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.

  • Are there any known side effects of doxycycline hyclate?

Some common side effects of doxycycline include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and photosensitivity, which increases the risk of sunburn. Less common effects include allergic reactions (rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing), yeast infections, headaches, or dizziness. Rare but serious side effects include severe skin reactions, liver or kidney damage, intracranial hypertension (persistent headache or vision issues), and blood-related disorders. Doxycycline should be taken with water and not just before bedtime to avoid esophageal irritation.

  • Can I take doxycycline hyclate with other medications?

Generally, yes. Doxycycline hyclate can be taken with most prescription and over-the-counter medications. However, it is always a good idea to inform your Nurx provider of all medications you are currently taking before taking doxycycline hyclate. Some ingredients like aluminum, iron, and zinc can interfere with doxycycline hyclate's effectiveness. Also, some medications like tretinoin, blood thinners, and anti-seizure medications can negatively interact with doxycycline hyclate.

  • Is doxycycline hyclate safe during pregnancy?

Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and those trying to conceive should not use doxycycline hyclate.
