Nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals (Macrobid) is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections. This medication is also known as Macrodantin, Macrobid, and Furadantin. The invention of antibiotics like nitrofurantoin have made UTIs less common in people living in developed countries than they once were.

Nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals stops the growth of bacteria. It works by killing the bacteria that are responsible for the urinary tract infection. Nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals treats UTIs very efficiently by targeting bacteria at the site of infection. This medication can be taken for 5-7 days, depending on how severe the infection is.

Common side effects of nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals include headache, gas, and nausea. Some nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals users may also experience vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or fatigue. Side effects may improve over time as your body adjusts to the medication. Unfortunately, there’s no fast way to clear up a UTI. While it typically takes 24-48 hours to see significant improvement with most UTI treatments, these antibiotics may not completely eliminate your symptoms for several days. Continue to take nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals for the full prescribed amount of time until it is finished, as stopping the medication too early may allow the infection to return.
