Lessina

Lessina prevents the release of an egg during the menstrual cycle. Lessina makes vaginal fluid thicker to prevent sperm from reaching the egg. Lessina also changes the lining of the uterus to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body.

Lessina is a 28-pill pack with seven reminder pills that contain no medication. In some cases, Lessina will come in a 21 pack without reminder pills. In this case, you'll stop taking Lessina for those seven days and resume on the eighth day. You can expect to have a normal period within that time frame.

Lessina is available by prescription and can be covered by insurance. Contact your insurance provider to see if Lessina is covered by insurance.

Take Lessina at the same time every day and in the correct order. Missing pills, taking your pill at a different time, or starting a pack late can all decrease the effectiveness of Lessina. Consider using a backup method for 48 hours or more as a precaution.

Women with a history of blood clots, blood clotting disorders, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol are advised to speak with their doctor about health conditions to determine if Lessina is right for them.

Occasionally Lessina may cause blotchy, dark areas on the face. Limiting your time in the sun and using sunscreen can decrease photosensitivity. Lessina has been known to interfere with other medications, including acetaminophen, so be sure to let your physician know what medications you are taking now to prevent problems later.

While allergic reactions are rare, report any symptoms of rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing to your physician immediately.

• Fluid retention (swelling of the ankles or feet).
• Spotting.

Serious side effects are uncommon but can include lumps in the breast, mood changes, severe abdominal pain, or unusual changes in vaginal bleeding. Rare side effects include blood clots, sudden dizziness or fainting, slurred speech, or shortness of breath.

No. Lessina works to stop the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. Although your periods may be irregular when first starting Lessina, they should regulate over time. The benefits of Lessina include lighter and less painful periods.

Yes! Because Lessina is a combination pill, it interferes with the production of androgens which results in a decrease in sebum production, and therefore helps control and treat acne. Give the medication two to three months to really see results.

Since vomiting or diarrhea can prevent proper absorption of the birth control medication, consider taking the medication after a meal or at bedtime if you experience stomach upset or diarrhea. Improper absorption can decrease the effectiveness of Lessina. Always remember to take the medication at the same time every day.

If you are switching birth control methods or starting Lessina for the first time, it's wise to use a backup method for your first cycle until the medication has a chance to get into your system and fully protect you.
