Descovy

Developed by Gilead Sciences, Inc., and marketed under their HIV treatment brand Truvada, Descovy helps keep your body free of HIV when taken every day. The brand-name drug combines two drugs in one tablet: Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Alafenamide (TAF). When taken daily, they form a barrier between you and HIV.

Descovy (emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide) tablets are available by prescription only in some countries. Atripla® (efavirenz, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) or Truvada® (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) can be considered as alternative treatment options.

If you are already taking antiretroviral medication, do not stop it without consulting your doctor. Also consult your doctor if you have an active liver disease or if you take medications that may negatively interact with Descovy, such as St. John’s wort or rifampin. It’s also important to speak with your physician before you discontinue any other health care treatments or supplements.

All medications have side effects. The most common side effects of Descovy are headache, muscle pain, abdominal pain, nausea and loss of appetite. If you experience any of these symptoms when taking Descovy, talk to your doctor about whether it might be something else or if another medication would be a better fit for you.

Descovy’s manufacturer (Gilead Sciences) suggests that their drug won’t cause any more or less weight gain than one of its other HIV-fighting drugs, Stribild. If you do notice your pants fitting a little tighter after starting on PrEP with Descovy, talk to your doctor.

If you are sexually active, have sex without condoms, or are in a relationship with someone who is HIV-positive, you may be at risk for HIV. By starting PrEP today, you can reduce your risk. Doctors prescribe PrEP to people who are HIV-negative but at high risk of getting infected with HIV. By taking PrEP consistently, daily as prescribed by your doctor, research shows that people on PrEP can significantly reduce their risk of getting HIV.

This daily pill will prevent your body from being infected with HIV if taken as prescribed—always use it in combination with other safe-sex practices. Remember: It’s not enough to take one pill a day for PrEP to work properly. So make sure you take one pill every day at roughly the same time(ish) of day, and try to do so without missing doses.
