Common Questions

  • What skincare treatments does Nurx offer?

Nurx providers can recommend and prescribe medically appropriate treatments for a range of common skin concerns. They offer a range of 20+ dermatologist-trusted oral and topical treatment options for acne, anti-aging, melasma, and rosacea. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating skin concerns, so our providers evaluate your skin’s specific needs and prescribe targeted treatments (if appropriate). Please note, we do not offer treatment for autoimmune skin disorders (like psoriasis or vitiligo) or skin cancer.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance?

We accept insurance for acne and rosacea prescription treatments, though we also offer affordable out-of-pocket prices for these medications as well. We do not accept insurance for medications prescribed for anti-aging (fine lines and wrinkles), melasma, eyelash growth, and women’s hair loss treatment, as insurance companies typically consider these services not medically necessary.

You can read more about the insurance we accept here. If you’d like to know if we accept your health insurance plan, please connect with our team at [email protected].

  • What type of anti-aging treatment do Nurx providers prescribe?

Nurx providers can prescribe a range of dermatologist-trusted retinoid skincare treatments to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. After reviewing your health history and the photos you share, a Nurx medical provider will prescribe the best treatment for your skin, if appropriate. If you have used a retinoid cream in the past and would like to use it again, please share that information when you complete your consultation.

  • What types of acne treatments do Nurx providers prescribe?

Nurx providers can prescribe several different treatments to target and reduce multiple types of acne, including mild to moderate, hormonal, body, and fungal acne. Options includes retinoid, antibiotic, and other oral and topical treatment options. When you complete your consultation, a Nurx provider will review your medical history and the images of your skin you provide to determine what type of acne you have and the best way to treat it. From there, you can check in with your Nurx provider to update your treatment (to a different strength or formula, when medically appropriate) as your skin adjusts.

  • Why do I need prescription skincare?

If drugstore or luxury skincare isn’t delivering the results you want, prescription-strength treatment may be the best next step. Prescription treatments are generally more targeted and contain higher-strength ingredients that aren’t available over-the-counter. Plus, if you aren’t entirely sure what is causing your skin concerns, a licensed provider can help you understand your skin and find the right treatment. Working with a provider can ultimately save you time and money instead of guessing and experimenting with different products. Some skincare prescriptions (for conditions like acne and rosacea) may be covered by your insurance.

  • What types of tretinoin does Nurx offer?

Nurx offers multiple strengths of tretinoin cream (0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1%) for both acne and anti-aging treatment. If appropriate, your Nurx provider can help you determine if the 0.025%, 0.05% or 0.1% tretinoin cream is best for you based on your symptoms and medical history.

  • How do you use tretinoin?

Tretinoin should be used once daily at bedtime. To use tretinoin cream, simply wash your face with a mild facial cleanser. Make sure your skin is dry before using the product. Then, take a pea-sized amount of tretinoin and apply a thin layer to the affected areas of your skin. We recommend following up with a layer of moisturizer, especially if you have dry or acne-prone skin.
Tretinoin may cause drying, flaking, or peeling skin. These effects can be managed by using more moisturizer and using the medication less frequently such as every other night when first starting. Many tretinoin users also see increased skin sensitivity, redness, and even breakouts in the first phases of treatment as their skin adjusts to the medication. Fear not—this is generally a sign that tretinoin is doing its job, and these symptoms typically resolve after 6 weeks of treatment.

  • What skincare treatments does Nurx NOT offer?

Nurx does not offer treatment for autoimmune skin disorders (like psoriasis or vitiligo) or skin cancer.
