Common questions

  • How does weight management with Nurx work?

Weight management by Nurx includes an online evaluation by a medical provider licensed in your state, medication prescribed (if medically appropriate) and delivered, regular check-ins, ongoing support from your Nurx provider and care team as well as education and lifestyle support to help you on your weight loss journey.

To start weight management treatment with Nurx, visit the Nurx website or download the Nurx app and fill out a comprehensive online intake, detailing your health history. A trained and licensed member of our medical team will evaluate your health profile and ask any follow up questions in order to confirm that we can safely and appropriately treat you via telehealth. If so, your provider will create a personalized weight management treatment plan that may include injections or oral medications. For best results, we recommend combining your prescribed treatment with a healthy diet and regular physical activity. If you're not currently active, it's a good idea to double check with your primary care provider to ensure that it's safe for you to begin treatment.

Certain medications (like oral treatments and compounded semaglutide) are fulfilled by our partner pharmacy and mailed directly to your home. You may also opt to pick up certain medications at a local pharmacy if preferred. Branded GLP-1s are not available for shipment via our pharmacy. These medications can be filled at the pharmacy of your choice.

A Nurx medical provider will check in with you about two weeks after treatment begins and ask you questions about how treatment is working and any side effects you may be experiencing. The Nurx provider will provide any support needed and may adjust the treatment plan as necessary. They can also prescribe certain medications to manage side effects if appropriate. In addition, patients may reach out to our medical team at any time with questions or to request a prescription change.

  • How much does the program cost?

The medical consult fee is a one time charge of $39. Patients will also be charged a monthly provider support fee of $59/month.

    • If you are prescribed compounded semaglutide, pricing starts at $179/month for lowest dose. Higher doses are $299/month.
    • If you are prescribed oral medication, you may be able to use insurance. If you use cash, your treatment plan will cost $60-105/month depending on your medications.
    • If you are prescribed branded GLP-1s, you will pick up and pay for medication at a local pharmacy. Pricing typically starts at $1,000/month on average.

  • Who is eligible for weight management with Nurx?

Depending on your medical history and weight loss goals, you may be eligible for our weight management service. Patients with a history of eating disorders, who are pregnant or breastfeeding or have hypersensitivity to specific medications are not eligible.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for weight management?

The care fee is cash pay only, but patients may be able to use their insurance for some weight management medications. Compounded GLP-1s are cash only and not available through insurance. Medication cost may vary based on prescribed treatment and applicable insurance coverage, price not guaranteed. Not all insurance plans are accepted. Medications are shipped and billed monthly. Additional costs apply, including consultation, ongoing care, and side effect management.

  • What type of weight loss medications do Nurx providers prescribe?

Nurx providers can prescribe oral medications as well as GLP-1 injectables. Oral medications include Naltrexone, Bupropion, Topiramate, and Metformin. Several treatments may be prescribed together for a comprehensive oral medication plan—your Nurx provider will determine which medication plan is medically appropriate.
Nurx providers may prescribe compounded Semaglutide (GLP-1 injections), if medically appropriate. Note, compounded GLP-1 medications are not available in California and Hawaii. Brand-name GLP-1 injection prescriptions are also an option, though these medications must be picked up and paid for at a local pharmacy.

  • How much weight can I lose working with Nurx?

While everyone's weight journey is different and the amount of weight loss varies for everyone, most patients taking weight loss medications who follow a healthy diet and regular exercise lose 1-2 pounds per week. We will work with you to find the treatment plan that is best for you and continue to support you throughout your weight loss journey. Individual results may vary.

  • What happens if I experience side effects?

To help mitigate any side effects you might experience from these medications, your provider will likely have you start with a low dose of treatment and gradually increase it over time to reach the target dose. If you do experience side effects, your provider can offer personalized guidance and resources to help. They also may prescribe treatment to help manage certain side effects if appropriate.

  • How does Nurx ensure the quality of compounded GLP-1 medications?

The quality of our compounded GLP-1 medications is of the utmost importance. Our base materials for compounded GLP-1s are sourced only from FDA-registered manufacturers. Each batch is pharmacist reviewed and third-party tested to ensure quality and safety standards are met. All batches receive a Certificate of Analysis (CoA), a document which confirms and summarizes all of the tests performed on a drug to confirm it meets required quality standards. All medication batches are tested for sterility, potency, pH, endotoxicity, and more.

  • What’s the difference between compounded GLP-1s and brand-name GLP-1s?

Brand-name GLP-1 medications are manufactured and sold exclusively by specific pharmaceutical companies. They are FDA approved, meaning they are subject to rigorous testing for safety and efficacy. They often require insurance approval, which can lead to delays and prior authorization requirements. Given high demand, brand-name GLP-1 medications are also subject to supply shortages.
Compounded versions of GLP-1s are made with the same active ingredients as brand-name drugs. They are custom-made by specialized pharmacies and do not receive FDA approval. As such, it’s important to only get compounded GLP-1s from a trusted resource, like Nurx, that follows protocols to ensure quality and safety. Compounded GLP-1s tend to be more accessible and affordable, making them a practical option for those without insurance coverage or facing barriers to brand-name medications. The quality of our compounded GLP-1 medications is of the utmost importance. Our base materials for compounded GLP-1s are sourced only from FDA-registered manufacturers. Please note, compounded drugs are not FDA-approved or evaluated for safety, efficacy, or quality. Nurx weight management compound drug offerings are not available to patients in California or Hawaii. All of Nurx’s compounded medications are prepared by our partner pharmacy.

  • Can I use my insurance to cover brand-name GLP-1s?

We recommend you contact your insurance company via the number on the back of your card to see if you have coverage for branded GLP1s.  You can also go directly to the manufacturer’s website and enter in your information to determine if you have coverage. Insurance coverage for brand-name GLP-1 medications typically require prior authorization, meaning your provider must get approval from your insurance company before you can get the prescription. This process can take several weeks and isn’t always approved, especially if the medication is prescribed for just weight loss (rather than diabetes).

  • Are Nurx’s services available in languages other than English?

At this time, we only provide care in English. We are committed to creating an inclusive experience and are exploring options to expand language support in the future.
